The governor, Sanwo-Olu, has granted clemency to 49 inmates in honor of his second-term commemoration.

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has granted the request of the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy and authorized the discharge of 49 prisoners who were being held in different correctional institutions across the state.

The Order of release was signed by the Governor on May 26, 2023, in recognition of his re-inauguration as the Governor of Lagos State for another term.

According to a statement released on Friday by the Director of Public Affairs, Grace Alo, on behalf of the state Ministry of Justice, the action taken was in compliance with Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria as amended.

Alo stated that the Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy has carefully considered the applications for pardon by taking into account various factors such as guidelines, information from correctional authorities, the severity of the offense, duration of imprisonment, age, health, and behavior of inmates.

The decision to release the prisoners aligns with the Governor’s dedication to fulfilling his promises. ” The Governor aims to alleviate overcrowding in correctional facilities located in Lagos State as a component of the Justice Sector Reforms.
